Starlink in Madagascar after 1 year: feedback

Madagascar, an island nation with breathtaking beauty but often facing connectivity challenges, now sees a glimmer of hope shining in its sky: Starlink.

About a year after officially launching its services, Elon Musk’s satellite internet is redefining the Big Island’s digital landscape.

It’s no longer just a promise, but a tangible reality that is beginning to transform lives.

Deployment: A Light in the Digital Shadows

It was in April 2024 that Starlink received the green light from the Malagasy government, a crucial step that marked the beginning of a new era.

Imagine isolated villages, rural schools, and small businesses cut off from the world, suddenly connected to high-speed internet.

This is precisely Starlink’s goal: to target these isolated areas where terrestrial infrastructure is nonexistent or failing.

An ambitious project, the Digital and Energy Connectivity for Inclusion in Madagascar (DECIM), funded by the World Bank, is currently underway to deploy this lifesaving technology in ten of these remote areas.

The vision is clear: to bridge the digital divide, which still affects nearly 80% of the population.

Early feedback: beyond promises

When Starlink announced speeds of up to 150 to 250 Mbps for the standard version and up to 100 Mbps for the Mini version, many were skeptical.

But early users in Madagascar report encouraging results.

Installation is described as simple and quick, and performance is generally considered satisfactory, even in environments that, until now, were synonymous with “dead zones.”

Of course, like any new technology, some adjustments were necessary, with some users reporting slow initial speeds, which were quickly resolved thanks to responsive customer support.

Starlink’s major advantage is its ability to provide a stable and fast connection where traditional options, such as fiber or ADSL, have yet to reach.

The Cost of the Digital Revolution

Of course, the question of cost is paramount. For individuals, the monthly subscription is around 226,000 ariary, to which must be added the cost of the equipment, approximately 1,120,000 ariary.

Special rates are also available for businesses, with priority plans starting at 316,800 ariary per month.

Starlink offers significant flexibility, with options tailored to different needs: individuals, businesses, as well as mobile plans for those constantly on the move.

A Transformative Impact and Challenges to Overcome

The arrival of Starlink in Madagascar is much more than just a technological advancement; it is a catalyst for development.

It opens unprecedented doors for education, by providing access to online educational resources, for the economy, by facilitating the development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and for the country’s overall digitalization.

However, Malagasy authorities, such as the Minister of Digital Development, Posts and Telecommunications, Stéphanie Delmotte, expect more from Starlink than simply providing a service.

They want to see concrete economic and social investments that directly benefit the Malagasy population.

After about a year, Starlink is no longer just a concept in Madagascar. It’s a reality taking shape, connecting communities, stimulating opportunities, and helping to shape a more inclusive digital future for the island.

The adventure is only just beginning, and the coming months will be crucial in assessing the full impact of this revolution from the sky.
