“Promoting industrialization, agricultural transformation and energy transition”

Loading

Huh? Wow, that’s a very nice leitmotif for this 45th SADC summit…

But in reality? Industrialization? Uh, it’s complicated without water and electricity, isn’t it?

Agricultural transformation? By importing more and more every year?

The energy transition? We won’t remind you where Sahofika and Volopooor are currently located… shut up, young people.

In short, a slogan that’s completely out of step with your realities since 2009, isn’t it?

Where everything went to hell, where nothing works anymore. Where the few that did work have been completely ruined: Air Madagascar, Jirama, etc.

Meanwhile, what about these other member countries? Ah, South Africa, Mauritius, Botswana, Namibia, and the Seychelles.

For comparison, we’re not going to talk about money, GDP, and all that today. But rather the HDI.

  1. Seychelles (HDI: 0.848 – Very High Human Development)
  2. Mauritius (HDI: 0.806 – Very High Human Development)
  3. South Africa (HDI: 0.741 – High Human Development)
  4. Botswana (HDI: 0.718 – High Human Development)
  5. Namibia (HDI: 0.698 – High Human Development)
  6. Angola (HDI: 0.616 – Medium Human Development)
  7. Zambia (HDI: 0.595 – Medium Human Development)
  8. Eswatini (Kingdom of) (HDI: 0.592 – Medium Human Development)
  9. Congo (Republic of Democratic Republic of the) (HDI: 0.591 – Medium Human Development)
  10. Comoros (HDI: 0.586 – Medium Human Development)
  11. Zimbabwe (HDI: 0.580 – Medium Human Development)
  12. Tanzania (HDI: 0.555 – Low Human Development)
  13. Lesotho (HDI: 0.550 – Low Human Development)
  14. Malawi (HDI: 0.512 – Low Human Development)
  15. Madagascar (HDI: 0.501 – Low Human Development)
  16. Mozambique (HDI: 0.461 – Low Human Development)

Uh, seriously, does something even worse in terms of HDI than Madagascar exist, right? 😳 Well, apparently so, with Mozambique.

After some quick research, all the figures and economic indicators are almost identical to those for Madagascar.

Otherwise, is it still useful to talk about the Comoros, to whom we were supposed to lend money? Io izy io, in the top 10.

Just one figure: Comorians today have twice the purchasing power of those endemic at the time we speak.

In short, here’s the overall picture, and let’s be honest, it’s not great.

Of course, we’ll try to pull the wool over our eyes with a few kilometers of asphalt, a cable car, and some fountains.

…but the bottom line is, let’s not kid ourselves, Malagasy society is sick. Very sick. And this applies in every area.
