How to react to the unpredictable?

Man is but a reed, the weakest in nature, but he is a thinking reed – Blaise Pascal

Huh? Yes, my little nocturnal musings on artificial intelligence always 😀

Let’s be clear: today, an AI can be as strong as a human on any subject known, documented, experienced, etc. If a solution has already been found for a given problem, then AI will be able to find that solution, quickly. Very quickly.

That’s it for the existing situation. But what about what we don’t yet know? A new, never-before-seen situation?

Humankind possesses qualities that an AI will never possess, at least not yet.

Namely? Namely, the ability to reflect. To reason. To discernment. To awareness too. And the most important one: creativity. Attributes that have enabled all the inventions we’ve known about since the dawn of time.

Will an AI one day be capable of this too? I don’t think so. I don’t even believe in this famous “artificial general intelligence” (AGI).

I don’t know, let’s try to think of something improbable, something that absolutely doesn’t exist today.

Do you think an AI would be capable of finding a solution? An AI wouldn’t. But humans would.

One point we agree on: all the inventions since the dawn of humanity today represent an incredible volume of information. I don’t think there’s a single human being who knows everything about everything. On the other hand, an AI… yes.

Oh well, I just thought of something improbable, something that absolutely doesn’t exist today but could one day. Yeeeees?

Yes, is it possible that we could imagine a simple system that would “graft” or “interface” with our brain and give us instant access to AI functionalities?

A tool that would allow me to query the AI AND receive the answer instantly. And all without having to type anything, express it vocally, or wear glasses. Just… thinking about it 😳

Well, Gemini, what do you think?

Even though there have already been extraordinary advances in the field, I’ll spare you his blabbering on the possibilities and give you his conclusion directly.

In conclusion, the idea of an implant that would give us instant access to AI is not pure science fiction. This is an active and exciting area of research, which could one day transform our relationship with technology and knowledge, while forcing us to rethink the foundations of what it means to be human.

As such, I don’t believe, even if we should never say never, that any AI, at the end of its giga-cogitations, will one day exclaim: “Eureka, Elman, I’ve found it, here’s the solution.”

A man, or a group of men, yes. And ultimately, in a way, isn’t that a bad thing?
